Swedish steel company SSAB plans to invest up to US $ 100 million in steel operations at its Mobile, Alabama plant. The goal is to increase production capacity for value-added high-strength steels, improving operational efficiency and reducing raw material costs.
The planned improvement works will be carried out from 2019 to 2021 and will increase the potential production capacity of high-strength steel by 130 thousand tons per year.
The plan is to install a new accelerated cooling system that SSAB says will reduce the need for alloys in the manufacturing process.
Chuck Schmitt, President of SSAB Americas, commented, "This announcement demonstrates SSAB's commitment to our operations in Alabama and our valuable customer base in North America."
Schmitt added that the planned investment in Mobile will increase production and improve quality and productivity.
Areas for investment include rolling mill, formatting, blasting and painting, as well as general lifting capacity. Over the years, SSAB's Albanian plant has continued investment, modernization and expansion worth over US $ 820 million.
