Total steel production in 64 worldsteel countries closed at a significantly higher level in the first ten months of 2018 compared to the previous year. Production during this period increased by 4.7% compared to the previous year and amounted to 1.502 billion tons. This is compared to production of 1.434 billion tonnes in January-October 2017. All regions except Europe reported an increase in production during January-October 18.
Asian steel output reached 1.058 billion tonnes, accounting for over 70% of world production. China led this growth, with production at 782.458 million. Chinese production increased 6.4% year on year.
North American steel production in January-October 2018 increased by 3.6%. During this period, production in the United States increased by 5.1% to 71.744 million tonnes. In contrast, Canadian crude steel production was down 4.5% year-on-year to 10.799 million tonnes. A jump of 2.7% was recorded in South American steel production in January-October 18th. African crude steel production rose sharply by 8.5% over the previous year. Middle East production has jumped 13%, according to world history data.
Steel production by the EU-28 countries decreased slightly by 0.8%. Meanwhile, output from other European countries rose marginally by 2.0%. In the CIS region and Oceania, there was a jump in production by 1.4% and 4.7%, respectively.
