Tokyo Steel Manufacturing, Japan's top electric arc steel producer, said Monday that steel product prices will remain stable in January next year despite declining prices in overseas markets.
The company raised prices for its heavy slabs in December by 2.5 percent due to tighter market conditions, but kept prices unchanged for all of its other products, including the company's main product, H-beams.
It is assumed that prices for all rolled steel, including rebar, in January will remain at 69 thousand yen (608 USD) per tonne. The price of H-beams will remain at 89,000 yen, while prices for heavy slabs will be around 83,000 yen.
“Domestic demand remains strong, so we keep the prices for our products despite the sharp drop in the overseas steel market,” said Kiyoshi Imamura, the company's managing director, at a briefing.
Shanghai steel rebar prices were down about 15 percent, peaking in mid-August this year at 3,420 yuan (US $ 496) per tonne.
“We anticipate that steel prices in China, which have now dropped to the lowest level, will begin to recover early next year, given the strong infrastructure demand in the local market,” he said.
