According to Worldsteel, global crude steel production in November 2018 was 148.617 million tonnes (tonnes), up from 140.535 million tonnes in the same month a year earlier. China has provided global growth in steel production. The volume of production in the country increased by 10.8% over the previous year. Chinese production accounted for more than 52% of the total world production. In addition, Japan became the second largest producer, displacing India in third place in November, although India was in second place in 11 months.
