Russian mining and metals group Severstal said iron ore pellet prices rose in the fourth quarter and production fell to 2.94 million tons from 3.3 million tons a year earlier.
Severstal iron ore pellet sales averaged $ 101 /t in the fourth quarter, up from $ 73 /t in the fourth quarter of 2017 and about 10% more than in the third quarter of 2018, according to the company's presentation. The average pellet price averaged $ 90 per tonne in 2018 compared to $ 79 per tonne in 2017 and $ 49 per tonne in 2016.
Pellet sales in the Karelsky Okatysh division increased from 2.55 million tonnes in Q3 2018, boosted by higher production volumes in the northwest of the Russian mine and a sell-off in the last quarter, the company said.
Higher pellet sales were supported by an increase in in-transit sales booked during the period.
Severstal's coking coal sales in 2018 were 3.37 mt, up 2% on 2017, despite a weak Q3 2018. Vorkutaugol coking coal concentrate prices averaged $ 115 per tonne in northwest Russia in the fourth quarter and $ 125 per tonne in 2018.
The company expanded sales of coal to external buyers during the quarter based on favorable pricing conditions, with domestic sales accounting for 83% of total sales.
