During two months of 2019, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises produced 3.08 million tons of rolled metal (99.3% compared to the same period in 2018), of which about 2.71 million tons, or 88.0%, were exported. In the same period in 2018, the share of exports amounted to 84.8% (2.64 million tons with a total production of 3.11 million tons of rolled metal). One of the reasons for the increased export activity in January-February of this year is the desire to maximize the use of the global tariff quota introduced by the European Commission as an intermediate, and then the final protective measure against the import of metal products into the EU.
The share of semi-finished products in export deliveries for 2 months of 2019 accounted for 47.53%, which is noticeably higher than the indicator for the period January-February 2018 (43.19%). The share of flat products in export supplies for 2 months also exceeds the indicator for the same period in 2018 (33.35% and 31.91%, respectively), but the share of long products in supplies to foreign markets for two months of 2019 is significantly lower than for the same period in 2018 (19.12% and 24.90%, respectively).
In January-February 2019, 555.9 thousand tons of rolled metal were supplied to domestic consumers, of which 186.9 thousand tons, or 33.6%, accounted for imports. For the same period in 2018, the domestic market consumed 663.1 thousand tons, of which 193.1 thousand tons, or 29.1%, were imported. Thus, in 2 months of 2018, the decrease in consumption of rolled metal in the domestic market compared to January-February 2018 amounted to -16.2%, while the import component decreased slightly (-3.2%).
The structure of imports for two months of 2019 is characterized by a noticeable domination of flat products over long products (54.25% and 42.11%, respectively); in the same period in 2018, the share of flat products was significantly higher than the share of long products (49.87% and 45.66%, respectively).
The main export markets of Ukrainian metal products in January-February 2019, according to the State Enterprise Derzhanalitinform, remain the countries of the European Union (34.7%), Africa (17.2%) and other European countries, including Turkey (12.5% ).
Among metallurgical importers for two months of 2019, the CIS ranks first (54.4%), second is the countries of the European Union (18.2%), and Asia is third (17.9%).
