Hyundai Steel Co., the second largest South Korean steel mill, said Monday it plans to cut its environmentally harmful emissions by more than 50 percent from current levels.
Hyundai Steel said it intends to spend approximately 530 billion won (US $ 468 million) to address fine dust and other harmful emissions by 2021. This step will reduce the amount of harmful emissions that it emits from 23,300 tons to 11,600 tons per year. target year.
In February, POSCO, the # 1 player, said it would spend about 1.1 trillion won by 2021 on drastic reduction of fine dust.
Over the past few years, the amount of fine dust has increased dramatically in South Korea. In particular, ultrafine dust particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers increase, which poses a threat to health.
On January 14 alone, Seoul recorded an average daily ultrafine dust level of 129 micrograms per cubic meter, the highest ever recorded. The second highest level is 99 micrograms per cubic meter, recorded on March 25, 2018.
To combat fine dust, Seoul is taking various steps, such as reducing the number of diesel vehicles, which are said to be responsible for about 20 percent of fine dust pollution in the metropolitan area.
