President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States has entered into an agreement with Canada and Mexico to lift duties on steel and aluminum imports from those countries. In return, Ottawa and Mexico will take steps to prevent Chinese steel exports to these countries.
Washington is to lift tariffs on Canadian and Mexican metals within 48 hours, while Canada and Mexico will simultaneously lift retaliation tariffs.
The United States and Canada also pledged to end relevant proceedings at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The deal will ease political pressure on Trump to ease trade disputes with allies in the Americas and work with them to increase pressure on China.
According to Canadian media, the breakthrough in the negotiations occurred when Washington refrained from demanding a contingent for Canadian steel and aluminum, which Ottawa strongly opposed. Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and US President Donald Trump made three phone calls - the last one on Friday morning.
