North American steel production increased 3.8%

The rise in US production was partially offset by huge declines in Cuba and Mexico.

The North American region reported a significant jump in steel production in April this year, according to the latest statistics released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). Regional output rose significantly by 3.8% from the previous month. Production in April 19 in the region was 10.196 million tons versus 9.823 million tons in the same month in 2018.

The notable growth in regional production was driven mainly by increased production in the United States, the largest steel producer in the region. US steel production rose 7.3% year over year. In April this year, the country's production amounted to 7.428 million tons. This compares to production of 6.922 million tonnes in April 2018.

Meanwhile, Mexico, the second largest regional steel producer, reported a marked decline in production. Production in Mexico fell 8.2% from 1.743 million tonnes in April 18 to 1.600 million tonnes in April this year. Canada - Another key producer reported a slight jump in monthly production. Steel production in Canada increased by almost 1.0% from 1.109 million tons to 1.120 million tons compared to the previous year.

These three countries accounted for approximately 99.5% of total North American steel production in April this year.

North American steel production in the first four months of 2019 was 40.707 Mt, up 3.4% from the previous year. It should be noted that in January-April 18, the volume of steel production in the region amounted to only 39.362 million tons.
