Pittsburgh-based Steel Steel has announced a layoff at its Great Lakes steel mill in Michigan. The company has issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notices (WARN) to fewer than 200 employees at the plant. This follows from the company's decision to stop production at the plant.
The layoffs at the plant are likely to last more than six months and are expected to impact the operation of the entire plant, from the blast furnace to operations, according to a company press release.
The layoffs directly cast doubt on the president's assertion that steel sector reforms, including the introduction of 25% tariffs on foreign steel imports, have led to a significant revival of the domestic steel industry. Despite the fact that prices bounced back immediately after the announcement, there was a sharp drop after that.
Union officials have hinted at planned layoffs at the Gary Works in Indiana. However, a spokesman for the company clarified that there are currently no expected changes in the employment rate at the Indiana facility.
