The government is pushing for steel recycling policies as it seeks to increase scrap use, production, reduce India's dependence on imports of raw materials for steel production, and attract investment.
“By next month we will probably have a solid policy. We have already prepared one at the Ministry of Steel, ”said Minister of Steel Binoy Kumar. “It will be more ambitious, bringing together the ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways perspectives, environmental perspectives ... and it will make a difference in the steel industry.”
The proposed policy aims to ensure a guaranteed and regular supply of recycled scrap for downstream industry. “Scrap steel comes from a variety of sources such as mill scrap, used structural elements such as beams, reinforcing steel and sheets, factories and equipment including pipes, pipes, old vehicles, household goods, car waste, shipbuilding, railways etc., ”the draft policy says.
The policy will cover scrap from the automotive, household, construction, railway, industrial sectors and others.
