According to the Federazione Imprese Siderurgiche Italiane (Federacciai), Italy produced about 1.54 million tonnes of steel in January-August, down 4.5% from the same period a year ago.
In August, total steel production was around 857,000 tonnes, down 26.6% year on year. Italian steel mills stopped production and maintenance in August, but production is still lower than expected, according to Federacciai.
According to the European Association of Steel Producers (EUROFER), the EU imported about 610,000 tonnes of hot rolled coils (HRC) in July, up 46% from the previous month. In total, Italy imported about 297,000 tons in July, which is almost half of all imports to the EU.
