Results of production and consumption of rolled metal in Ukraine for 9 months of 2019

During the nine months of 2019, metallurgical enterprises of Ukraine produced 14.09 million tons of rolled metal, which is 2% higher compared to the same period in 2018, of which about 11.67 million tons were exported, or 82.8% in 2019. In the same period in 2018, the share of exports amounted to about 81.1% of 11.22 million tons, with the total production of rolled metal products of 13.83 million tons.

The share of semi-finished products in export deliveries for 9 months of 2019 is 45.95%, which is slightly higher than the indicator for the period January-September 2018 (43.78%). The share of flat products in export deliveries for 9 months is slightly lower than the indicator for the same period in 2018 (33.77% and 34.85%, respectively); the share of long products in supplies to foreign markets in 9M 2019 is also slightly lower than in the same period in 2018 (20.28% and 21.38%, respectively). The leading manufacturer of rolled metal products in Ukraine is Metinvest. On the domestic market, the most demanded products offered by Metinvest are flat products and long sections, such as wire rod 8-10 , angle, channel and other products.

In January-September 2019, 3501.8 thousand tons of rolled metal were supplied to domestic consumers, of which 1075.8 thousand tons or 30.7% were imported. For the same period in 2018, the domestic market consumed 3,694.2 thousand tons, of which 1,078.2 thousand tons or 29.2% were imported. Thus, for 9 months of 2018, the decrease in consumption of rolled metal in the domestic market compared to January-September 2018 is 5.2%, while the share of imports slightly increased by 1.5%.

The structure of imports for 9 months of 2019 is characterized by a noticeable dominance of flat products over long products (55.94% and 40.81%, respectively); in the same period in 2018, the dominance of flat products over long products was less significant (49.38% and 47.50%, respectively).

The main export markets of Ukrainian metal products in January-September 2019 are the countries of the European Union (34.1%), Africa (17.3%) and the Middle East (11.9%).

Among the importers of rolled metal products for 9 months of 2019, the CIS ranks first (51.0%), the second is the EU-28 (19.6%), and the third is the countries of Asia (18.3%).
