ArcelorMittal Italia will put all blast furnaces at the former Ilva smelter in Taranto on hold by 15 January 2020 as it plans to close all production at the site. BF2 will shut down on December 12, BF4 on December 30, and BF1 on January 15, while strip mill 2 will be closed from November 26 to 28. BF3 and BF5 are currently out of service.
ArcelorMittal Italia CEO Lucia Morselli has briefed unions on the plan to close the blast furnace. Italian union FIM-CISL said ArcelorMittal had confirmed that it would hand over the troubled Ilva steelworks to state-appointed administrators on December 4 and had already begun to phase out operations.
FIM-CISL General Secretary Marco Bentivogli said: “The latest statement from ArcelorMittal today confirms what the union has been saying for weeks. It is clear that if Ilva's special administration does not take responsibility for all personnel quickly on December 4, the situation will become even more serious. ”
