Latin American Steel Association Alacero is surprised and worried by the decision of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to restore import tariffs on steel and aluminum from Brazil and Argentina, arguing that these countries have led to massive devaluation of their currencies, explaining that this is not good for American farmers. Alesero notes: “We believe that in free currency trading, exchange rates fluctuate according to the internal and external scenarios of each country without government manipulation, at least in the case of Argentina and Brazil. For our association, a representative of the Latin American steel chain, manipulation of tariffs on important goods for the economies of partner countries is not permissible.
Alesero stressed that the decision, expressed in the President's Twitter message, is harming his own country's economy, as the steel chain in the United States of America needs steel products that are not always produced domestically and depend on partner countries such like Brazil and Argentina.
Alacero says: “This stance by the US government in the face of current international trade conflicts is having an even greater impact on Latin America, whose economy needs more stability than ever to bolster its growth plans for the near future. It is important to note that Alacero, along with Argentina, Brazil and other countries in the region, are playing an active role as strategic allies for the United States of America in the fight against global excess steel production, bringing together the OECD Global Surplus Steel Forum.
