British steel companies have called on the government to complete HS2 to stimulate the emerging sector. UK Steel CEO Gareth Stays told The Telegraph that the project should take place to stimulate the steel industry. He said: “The Prime Minister spoke frequently during the election campaign about unlocking Britain's potential, investing in much-needed infrastructure, and the promised new approach to public procurement with a focus on buying British people. Giving HS2 the green light will signal the industry that this is more than just campaign rhetoric. For too long, HS2 and other major infrastructure projects have been hampered by the political deadlock in Westminster, and the time for delay and indecision has passed.
The rail project, which will link London, the Midlands and the north, is expected to use 2 million tonnes of steel if completed. However, the project is in some doubt as projected costs have risen to £ 88bn and the government is currently reviewing its viability. Commissioned by the government, a project viability report was recently leaked to the press, suggesting that HS2 should develop in its entirety.
