An Italian court ruled that one of three blast furnaces at the ArcelorMittal metallurgical plant in Ilva should not be shut down, despite concerns that this was a safety violation. According to the new decree, blast furnace 2 will continue to operate.
We remind you that in June 2015, after an accident killed 35-year-old worker Alessandro Morricella, who fell under a stream of molten iron. The ordinance gave commissioners up to 12 months to meet a number of requirements to bring the oven into compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
The decision reverses a previous order from the local magistrate that the furnace should be closed following the death of a worker at Europe's largest iron and steel plant in the city of Taranto.
The ruling removes a potential obstacle in negotiations between the state-appointed commissioners running the Ilva plant and ArcelorMittal to reopen a 2018 deal for the world's largest steelmaker to buy unprofitable steel mills.
