Indian steelmakers have called for lower import duties on important ingredients such as coking coal, anthracite and metallurgical coke.
The country's metallurgists are highly dependent on the import of these raw materials due to the lack of sufficient domestic resources. A steel mill official said: “Anthracite coal, coking coal, coke are vital ingredients in steel making. Reducing import duties on imported raw materials will help the steel industry achieve and maintain cost competitiveness. The lack of these resources, both in terms of quantity and quality, impedes the growth of the domestic steel industry. "
Under the existing duty structure, coking coal is subject to a 2.5% import duty. The Indian government levies a 10 percent duty on coke imports, while anthracite imports are taxed at 2.5 percent.
