China's finished steel production in December was 104.33 million tonnes, up 11.3% year-on-year, and full year steel production was 1.20477 billion tonnes, up 9.8% year-on-year earlier. China's pig iron production in December was 67.06 million tonnes, up 6.0 percent from a year earlier, while pig iron production for the full year was 809.37 tonnes, up 5.3 percent from a year earlier.
Steel demand in China remained robust in 2019, even as the world's second largest economy came under pressure from slowing domestic growth and a fierce trade war with the United States. The real estate market was stronger than expected and rising infrastructure spending also boosted demand for steel as a vital building material.
The Metallurgy Association of China said last week that it expects further growth this year, projecting China's steel demand in 2020 at around 890 million tonnes, up 2% from 2019. She said that growth will slow down due to lower demand from cars. and the shipping sectors, while new construction is also expected to slow.
