ANSA, citing trade union sources, reports that 3 explosions were recorded in furnace # 2 of the ArcelorMittal metallurgical plant in the southern city of Taranto on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. Sources said no one was hurt, although the explosions caused extensive damage.
Unions said the accident was reported ahead of the shutdown of kiln # 1 at the plant, resulting in increased production of the kiln damaged by the incident, requiring maintenance work. ArcelorMittal is set to lay off 477 to 277 workers at the former ILVA steel mill in the port city due to the closure of furnace # 1.
Kiln # 1 will be closed for about two months, until March 31, 2020, which brings the unions together. ask ArcelorMittal to suspend operations for security reasons.
