According to various market sources, US Steel intends to further reduce blast furnace capacity in the Mont Valley area outside Pittsburgh amid low demand. At its Gary Works in Indiana, supplies are expected to be cut, she said.
The steelmaker is expected to take Blast Furnace # 1 at Mon Valley off-line by the end of next week. The blast furnace has a design capacity of 1.09 million per year and is one of two at the plant.
Sources said the plant does not currently plan to shut down blast furnace # 3.
Blast Furnace # 6 from Gary Works is also to be taken offline, and according to sources, only Furnace # 14 was in operation on site. Furnace # 6 has an annual capacity of 1.23 million tonnes.
US Steel has already announced that furnaces # 4 and # 8 will operate at the plant over the past month, with restarts subject to improved market demand.
A buyer's source said the US Steel contact confirmed that only three blast furnaces would remain operational after the adjustments. Three kilns are expected to operate in Mont Valley, Gary and Granite City, Illinois.
