EU gives ArcelorMittal a loan to expand carbon reduction technologies

The European Investment Bank, with the support of the European Commission, provided ArcelorMittal with a € 75 million loan to build two groundbreaking projects at ArcelorMittal Ghent in Belgium to significantly reduce carbon emissions by converting waste and by-products into value. new products to help develop low-carbon steel production technologies in line with EU climate targets.

Project details include:

Steelanol: A € 165 million commercial scale demonstration plant that will capture blast furnace off-gases and biologically convert them to recycled carbon-ethanol, the first commercial product of the ArcelorMittal Carbalyst® family of recycled carbon chemicals. The resulting ethanol can be blended for use as a liquid fuel. The technology was developed by LanzaTech, with which ArcelorMittal has entered into a long-term partnership with Primetals and E4tech. Upon completion, the plant is expected to produce up to 80 million liters of recycled carbon ethanol per year. The new facility will create up to 500 jobs over the next two years and 20 to 30 new permanent jobs. The project is expected to be completed in 2022.

ArcelorMittal Europe is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, with further carbon neutral ambitions by 2050, in line with the EU Green Agreement and the Paris Agreement.
