Liberty Steel said it intends to increase production at its Rotherham plant in northern England, as well as cut carbon emissions. Expansion plans include the Liberty steel mill in Rotherham, which will begin producing rebar. It will seek to fill a gap in the UK rebar market, of which about half of the 1.2 million tonnes of demand is met by imports.
The operation has two electric arc furnaces that it wants to use to process more steel scrap produced in Britain, much of which is exported and melted overseas. Electric arc furnaces emit significantly less CO2 than coal-fired blast furnaces.
