The National Union of Metallurgists of South Africa announced that it will hold a picket at several sites at ArcelorMittal on Monday. NUMSA said: “The picket will take place on Monday morning, after which the union will hand over a memorandum of demands. Picketing will take place at ArcelorMittal in Sedibeng, Vanderbijlpack, Vereeniging, Pretoria and Newcastle. Our members believe they must take this radical course of action because of the backward leadership of Kobus Verster, the current GCEO and the actions taken against employees. ”
ArcelorMittal SA is consulting with staff on the section 189 process and workforce reductions, the statement said.
In June, the company said it would begin a massive restructuring. ArcelorMittal SA already announced 1,000 job cuts in January to cut costs, but said on Thursday that previously implemented cost-saving initiatives will not be enough and further workforce cuts are needed.
