EWE and its subsidiary Swb and steel producer ArcelorMittal signed a letter of intent to cooperate. The agreement aims to produce green hydrogen in Bremen. At the site of the power plant in Mittelburen, a first phase will include an electrolysis plant with a capacity of up to 24 megawatts, which will provide the ArcelorMittal steel mill with green hydrogen.
The project not only pays for the National Hydrogen Strategy, adopted in June, which aims to make green hydrogen marketable. The project, titled "HyBit - Hydrogen for the Industrial Transformation of Bremen", also follows the European hydrogen strategy presented by the European Commission last week. First of all, this concerns the decarbonization of large industries.
ArcelorMittal aims to produce CO2 neutral steel in Europe by 2050. By 2030, emissions should be reduced by 30 percent. The achievement of these goals is based on the use of new technologies. The use of green hydrogen plays an important role in the Group's strategy; this helps to reduce the use of carbon in the iron making process.
