The top three steel producing countries in the region include Germany, Italy and France.
European crude steel production reported a significant decline in June this year, which is largely in line with the drop in global steel production.
According to the World Steel Association (worldsteel), during the month, domestic European production totaled 10.156 million tonnes. This is slightly lower by 24.6% when compared to the 13.469 million tonnes produced by the region in the same month a year earlier. Aggregate steel output from January to June this year also reported a decline of about 19% over the previous year.
Germany topped the list with a total production of 2.475 million tonnes. The country accounted for more than 24% of all regional production. However, production in the country fell 27% from the same month a year earlier. Italian production fell by about 13% from 2.080 million tonnes in June 2019 to 1.810 million tonnes in June this year. French production totaled 86,300 tons, a sharp drop of nearly 35% over the previous year.
Crude steel production in the EU-28 in the first six months of this year amounted to 68.278 million tons. Until June of this year, all countries except Bulgaria reported a decrease in production in the first half of 2019. Germany, Italy and France continued to be the leading steel producers in the region.
