North American steel production fell 28% in July from the same period last year, according to the latest data released by the World Steel Association. In July of this year, production was 7.209 million tons (million tons), compared with 10.019 million tons in the same month a year earlier.
Total crude steel production in Canada was 800,000 tonnes in July this year, down 24.5% from July 2019. The United States produced 5.241 million tons of crude steel, down 29.4% from 7.419 million tons a year earlier. Mexico's total crude steel production fell 22.6% from 1.486 million tons in July 1919 to 1.150 million tons in July this year.
Steel production in Cuba fell sharply by 73.3% compared to the same period last year to about 5,000 tons. Steel production in El Salvador is estimated at 3,000 tons in July this year, down 68.6% from July last year. Guatemala produced 10,000 tons, down 61.6% from the same month a year earlier.
The region's total steel production in the first seven months of the year was 57.621 million tonnes, down 19% year-on-year. In January-July 1919, 70.898 million tons of crude steel were produced in the North American region.
