US President Donald Trump, citing the protection of the US domestic steel industry, has lowered the restriction on acceptable steel supplies from Brazil.
In a proclamation released late Friday night, Trump amended a previous ruling under Section 232 of the Homeland Security Authority to lower the restriction on allowed imports. He wrote: For the purpose of applying the quantitative limit applicable to HTSUS Chapter 99 Subchapter III position 9903.80.57 for Brazil, the Brazilian annual aggregate limit set out in the Appendix to this statement applies to the 2020 calendar year. the cumulative limit, which must account for all imports of steel products from Brazil covered by this heading, from 1 January 2020, will apply to steel products introduced for consumption or taken out of stock for consumption under this heading,
The limits were set in 2018 as part of an agreement between the countries to avoid tariffs that Trump applied to other countries.
