Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Katsunobu Kato, has warned against liquidating assets owned by Japanese companies Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corp. in South Korea, where a court last year approved the seizure of company assets to compensate for forced labor during the war.
The secretary said the seizure of Japanese assets could lead to a serious situation. He said: “The Japanese side has repeatedly and persistently pointed to this. We want to continue to persistently demand that the Korean side offer a solution in the near future. "
In October 2018, the South Korean Supreme Court ordered Nippon Steel to pay plaintiffs approximately $ 85,000 each in a forced labor case during the war. The Japanese company appealed the decision in August.
