ArcelorMittal Zenica completes investment to reduce dust emissions

ArcelorMittal Zenica celebrated the completion of two major environmental investments that will improve air quality in a ceremony attended by senior officials from the federal, cantonal and city of Zenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The sinter plant has a second hybrid filter that reduces dust emissions from sinter machine No. 1. 6 is below 10 mg /Nm3, a level that is within the limits of the European Union standards, and also well below the legal limit of 50 mg /Nm3 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 2017, ArcelorMittal Zenica became the first steel mill in the world to install an industrial hybrid filtration technology in a sinter plant. The filtration technology was developed through a partnership between the Danish global engineering company FLSmidth and the ArcelorMIttal R&D team with a team of seven researchers and six technicians working during the design and test phases of the project.

The ceremony also marked the completion of the installation of a secondary dedusting system at BOF Steel, a € 5.1 million project. Currently, the process of putting the entire system into operation and equipment testing is underway, which will be completed by the end of 2020. ArcelorMittal Zenica worked with the Italian engineering company Ekoplant on this project.

The company is also in the process of installing new gas boilers for a new combined heat and power plant that will provide clean energy in the city of Zenica, as part of a joint venture with the city of Zenica, which is being built with EBRD financing. This will reduce SO2 emissions by 80% from the plant, which is Zenica's only external heat supplier during winter.
