The leading producer, China, accounted for almost 79% of the total production in the region in a month. The latest production data released by the World Steel Association (wordteel) indicates a modest increase in steel production in Asian countries this September. China was the leader in production growth in the region, with production up 10.9% year over year.
The Asian region produced 117.997 million net tonnes of steel in September 2020, up 7.4% from the same month a year earlier. In September 2019, regional production was only 109.885 million tonnes.
The leading manufacturer, China, accounted for almost 79% of the total production in the region in a month. Production in China was 92.555 million tonnes. India was the second largest steel producer in the region, followed by Japan. Production in India was NT 8.520 million, while Japanese production fell sharply to 6.486 million.
In September 2020, crude steel production by other countries in the region was as follows: South Korea (5.831 million tonnes), Taiwan (1.605 million tonnes), Vietnam (2.321 million tonnes), Pakistan (340,000 tonnes) and Thailand (340,000 tonnes).
Aggregate production in the region in the first nine months of this year increased slightly by 0.2% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 1.002 billion tonnes. The top three producers from January to September 2020 were China (781.593 million tonnes), India (70.203 million tonnes) and Japan (61.208 million tonnes). Production in Vietnam grew by almost 15%. On the other hand, steel production in Japan fell the most - by more than 19%.
