A new steel plant, built with a $ 17 million investment, has begun operations in Kampong Speu province in Cambodia. The new plant, called Hong De Sheng (Cambodia), uses recycled steel and scrap steel as raw materials and has a total processing capacity of 500,000 tons per year. The steel produced at the mill will meet the growing demand for steel from the local construction sector.
According to Lin Xiangrong, Chairman of the Board of Hong De Sheng (Cambodia), the plant will initially supply steel, recycled steel and scrap metal for domestic production of finished steel. It can even import metals at a later stage if needed. He appreciated the support provided by national and local authorities in the establishment of the plant. According to him, about 250 local workers currently work at the plant.
Meanwhile, Cambodia's Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation said the plant's operations would bring enormous benefits to the country's construction sector, which has generally not been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Once fully operational, the plant could help the country reduce its dependence on steel imports. By the way, last year the country imported almost 720 thousand tons of steel.
It is the third steel plant in the country to use recycled scrap metal to make finished steel products.
