Steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggest an almost 1.6% increase in production in the Asian region in the previous year. Among the major regional producers, China showed production growth, while Japanese and Indian production declined compared to 2019.
Steel production in Asia was 1.351 billion tonnes in 2019, up 1.6% from 1.330 billion tonnes in the previous year. Steel production in China was 1.053 billion tons, up 5.2% over the previous year. The country accounted for over 78% of all regional production during the year.
India continued to be the second largest producer in the region with production of 99,570 million tonnes, down 10.6% from the previous year. In third place was Japan with an annual production of 83.194 mln tons. Production in Japan fell sharply by more than 16% compared to 2019.
Among all countries in the region, Pakistan and Vietnam reported strong year-over-year steel production growth. In Pakistan, production increased by 13.3%, while in Vietnam in 2020, production increased by 11.6%.
Steel production in Asia in December 2020 amounted to 118.616 mln tons. The leading producers during the month were China (91.252 ml tons), India (9.796 ml tons), Japan (7.526 ml tons), South Korea (5.952 ml tons) and Taiwan (1,700 ml tons).
