Klaus-Dieter Frankenberger, a columnist for the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), published a commentary on Joe Biden's position on the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline:
“New US President Joe Biden has repeatedly emphasized how valuable and politically important relations with allies are to him. In this regard, he is fundamentally different from his predecessor Donald Trump, who looked to allies as a collector for debtors.
However, on some controversial issues, Washington's position remained the same even after the change of the American administration. One of them is criticism of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas was now forced to personally listen to the objections of the White House (during a meeting with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken March 23 - Ed.). One of Washington's arguments is that by continuing to build the pipeline, Germany is favoring Russia's attempts to undermine NATO's collective security. This does not sound as harsh as Trump's remarks, but it is very similar.
Germany may still abandon Nord Stream 2
Despite all its enthusiasm for the change of the White House owner, the FRG government must finally admit that the current course will lead it to a dead end. Berlin is stubbornly clinging to a project that has been controversial in the EU and NATO for years - at a time when the Kremlin leader is enjoying his spoiler role.
Trump's America First Principle irritated Berlin. However, many of Germany's partners draw parallels between the course of the former US president and Germany's position on Nord Stream 2 or in relation to China.
The German government still has time to find a way out of the crisis into which it has plunged itself. Does Berlin really think that Biden will so easily come to terms with the gas deal between Germany and Putin? "
Biden will not put up with Nord Stream 2
