The Russian steel company PAO Severstal, one of the leading vertically integrated steel and mining companies, has been recognized by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) as the champion in the sustainable development of the steel industry. Every year, the Steel Sustainable Development Champions program honors those metallurgical companies that most clearly demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development. For the first time, Russian corporations have become the champions of the program.
When selecting leaders in sustainability, worldsteel takes into account the effectiveness of materials, environmental management systems, frequency of lost time injuries, employee training, investment in new processes and products, and shared economic value. Moreover, steelmakers are required to submit their life cycle inventory data to the worldsteel data collection program, which covers more than 50% of crude steel company data over the past five years.
In 2020, Severstal increased investments in environmental protection measures by 1.7 billion rubles (23 million US dollars) to 2.67 billion rubles (35 million US dollars). In 2019, Severstal invested RUB 938 million (USD 12.4 million).
