ArcelorMittal's Spanish plant in Sestao will be the world's first steelmaker with zero CO2 emissions throughout the entire production process. This will be possible through the use of green hydrogen and electricity from renewable energy sources.
The project is part of a memorandum of understanding that ArcelorMittal and the Spanish government signed on June 13th. The plan calls for an investment of € 1 billion ($ 1.18 billion) to build a direct reduction plant with green hydrogen, as well as a new hybrid electric furnace at the Gijón plant.
“This plan depends on the supply of massive quantities of hydrogen at affordable prices, access to sustainable funding and a supportive legal framework that allows us to be globally competitive,” commented CEO Aditya Mittal.
The Sestao plant, which produces a wide range of flat steel products for the automotive, construction and general industries, is projected to produce 1.6 million tonnes of zero-carbon steel by 2025. existing electric arc furnaces increasing the proportion of recycled scrap and using pre-reduced iron produced with green hydrogen in Gijón. As ArcelorMittal explains, all steel structures in the plant are supplied with renewable energy sources.
