Europe
Salzgitter plans to restart Blast Furnace C, the smallest of the furnaces in its Flachstahl plant, in November. The company announced this during the presentation of its semi-annual profit. The reason for his decision was the strong financial performance in the first six months of 2021 and the expectation of a continuation of the supply deficit. The furnace was shut down in 2019 due to low market demand. The annual production of crude steel is 600,000 tons. It is expected that after its inclusion, the total capacity of the plant will exceed five million tons per year.
North America
ArcelorMittal has announced its intention to decarbonize production at its Hamilton, Ontario facility. This involves replacing the blast furnaces currently in operation at the site with a direct reduction (DRI) unit with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum and an EAF with an annual capacity of 2.4 million tonnes. ArcelorMittal has committed C $ 1.765 billion for this project, including a C $ 400 million investment from the Government of Canada. The goal is to reduce the plant's CO2 emissions by sixty percent over the next seven years.
Evraz North America has begun construction of a new premium rail mill at its Rocky Mountain Steel bar mill in Pueblo, Colorado. The line has a nominal annual production capacity of 670,000 short tons of rail sections, each up to 100 meters long. Commissioning is expected around the end of 2022.
Asia
Jindal Stainless, an Indian company, has announced plans to double production at its facility in Jajpur, Odisha. The company will achieve this by installing a new AOD converter, ladle furnace and continuous casting plant on site. This new equipment will increase the plant's annual production capacity to 2.2 million tonnes. Commissioning is expected at the end of 2022.
In October, Jin'an Stainless Casting Company will begin work on the installation of a new 70 ton EAF and ladle furnace at its Anhui facility. It is planned that the equipment will be operational in about twelve months. The project is part of the company's capacity replacement program. Total production will remain at 500,000 tonnes per year.
