Poland received a fine from the EU, this time a million euros a day

Польша получила штраф от ЕС, на этот раз по миллиону евро в день
Another million euros is now added to the daily penalty of half a million euros for not stopping production at the Turuv mine near the border with the Czech Republic.

The Turuv brown coal mine and the power plant of the same name are owned by PGE Górnictwo and Energetyka Konwencjonalna. The power plant produces 7% of the electricity in Poland and is one of the most powerful in the state.

Both sites are located near the borders with the Czech Republic and Germany, countries that have reported environmental damage from the mine. In particular, Prague insists that coal mining has a negative impact on border areas, where the level of groundwater has decreased.

Despite this, Poland wanted to operate the mine until 2044.

And now, the Court of Justice of the European Union has imposed a fine of one million euros a day for refusing to suspend the activities of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court, which punishes judges. The country already has to pay a fine of half a million euros for not shutting down the Turuv mine. Poland still does not do this.

The dispute over the disciplinary regime of Polish judges is part of a broader debate about Polish judicial reform, part of which, according to the EU judiciary, threatens the independence of the country's judiciary.

The fine must be paid by the country until it fully complies with the court order and the disputed instance ceases to operate.
