The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has published a list of the ten largest crude steel producers for September this year.
China continued to be the leader in steel production with a production volume of 73.8 million tonnes (mt). Compared to September last year, the volume of production in the country has significantly decreased by 21.2%. The total volume of steel production in the country in January-September 21 amounted to 805.9 million tons, which is 2.0% more compared to the same period last year.
India was the second largest producer of crude steel with an estimated production of 9.5 million tonnes. Production in the country increased by 7.2% over the same period last year. India's crude steel production through September this year was 87.3 million tonnes. In third place was Japan, whose production volume in September this year increased by 25.6% compared to the same period last year and amounted to 8.1 million tons. According to worldsteel, aggregate production in Japan for the period from January to September 21 increased by 17.9% to 72.1 million tons.
Other countries in the world that will enter the top ten include the United States (7.3 million tonnes), Russia (5.9 million tonnes), South Korea (5.5 million tonnes), Germany (3.3 million tonnes), Turkey ( 3.3 million tons), Brazil (3.1 million tons). and Iran (1.3 million tons).
Steel production by the 64 reporting countries to the association was 144.4 million tonnes in September 2021, down 8.9% from September 2020. These 64 countries accounted for approximately 98% of the total world unrefined production over the past year.
