The governments of the UK, India, Germany and Canada have announced their intention to purchase low carbon steel through the Deep Industrial Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI) announced on Tuesday 9 November.
A group of countries announced their intention to purchase low carbon steel and concrete at the UN Climate Change Conference, COP26, in Glasgow, with specific interim targets for 2030, expected to be announced at the next Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) meeting in mid-2022 of the year.
These two materials account for 14-16% of the world's energy-related CO2 emissions, making them some of the most carbon-intensive industrial materials on the planet.
Currently, government purchases of steel and cement in these countries account for 25-40% of the domestic market.
