The UK government announced on 18 January that the government would not interfere with prices under the influence of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The decision meant that the market would run without intervention in January, although future official options remain open if prices rise excessively.
The UK ETS offers the option of delivering allowances from future auctions if prices exceed the long-term average for three consecutive months, but such intervention is not required.
Following the launch of the UK ETS Cost Containment Mechanism (CCM) in January, the UK ETS body decided not to reallocate or release additional supplies to the market at this time.
