The cost of transporting scrap metal domestically in Germany and the Benelux countries has risen further over the past month due to a shortage of truck drivers and rising diesel prices.
Scrap suppliers said that logistics costs for truckloaded scrap shipments have risen another 5-10% over the last 4-6 weeks, and will rise by around 5% in 2021. new trucks, increased costs for truck drivers, and higher hiring fees from third party providers.
Despite the higher cost of shipping trucks, many scrap metal suppliers cannot change the delivery method. One alternative is to use trains to transport scrap metal, but it is not easy to reserve railcars.
Another option is to receive or send packages on a river barge, but this method is not available to suppliers located far from the port.
