ArcelorMittal said it will install a new direct reduced iron plant with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons and an electric steel furnace with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million tons at the Dofasco plant in Hamilton, Ontario.
The introduction of these new technologies and equipment could reduce Dofasco's emissions by approximately 3 million tons, which is about 60% of total emissions.
The project is an operational investment plan for decarbonization until 2028 with an investment of approximately CAD 1.8 billion.
Plans for the decarbonization project came into effect after ArcelorMittal received a C$500 million investment from the government of Ontario.
The Government of Canada previously announced an additional CAD$400 million investment in the project in 2021.
