China's State Council Commission on Customs Tariffs said China will cut import tariffs on all types of coal to zero from May 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 in an effort to secure energy supplies and reduce import costs due to concerns about rising global prices and supply disruption.
Import tariffs on anthracite and coking coal will be reduced to zero from the current 3%, and tariffs on other types of coal will be eliminated from the current 3-6%.
Russian coal was said to be the biggest beneficiary of the decision, as the country is the second largest coal supplier after Mongolia last year.
China's coal imports in 2021 amounted to about 323.3 million tons, which is approximately 8% of its total consumption.
