Ukrainian enterprises in January of this year reduced consumption of rolled metal by 37% compared to the same period last year - to 137.7 thousand tons from 219.1 thousand tons. This was reported by the Ukrmetallurgprom association of enterprises. According to the press release of the association, during the reporting period, 85.1 thousand tons were imported, or 61.80% of the domestic market for rolled metal consumption.
According to Ukrmetallurgprom, in January 2024, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises produced 453 thousand tons of rolled metal (175.9% compared to the same period in 2023), of which, according to the State Customs Service of Ukraine, about 400.4 thousand were exported. tons, or 88.4%.
The share of semi-finished products in export supplies in January 2024 is 55.65%, which is significantly higher than in January 2023 (41.84%). The share of flat rolled products in export supplies in January 2024 is comparable to the figure in January 2023 (33.55% and 32.24%, respectively). The share of long products is significantly lower than in January 2023 (10.0% in 2024 versus 25.91% in 2023).
In January 2024, the capacity of the domestic market amounted to 137.7 thousand tons of rolled metal, of which 85.1 thousand tons or 61.80% were imported. In January 2023, the capacity of the domestic market was 219.1 thousand tons, of which 53.4 thousand tons or 24.36% were imported. Thus, in January 2024, there is a reduction in the capacity of the domestic market in relation to January 2023 by 37.15%, with a simultaneous increase in the share of the import component by 59.47%.
The structure of imports in January 2024 is still characterized by a significant dominance of flat products over long products (83.92% and 15.11%, respectively); in January 2023, the dominance of flat products over long products was also significant (76.62% and 22.28%, respectively).
As reported, the Ukrainian rolled metal market in 2023 grew 2.19 times compared to 2022 – to 3 million 505.6 thousand tons. During this period, 1 million 118.6 thousand tons were imported, or 31.91% of the domestic market for rolled metal consumption. In 2023, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises produced 5.37 million tons of rolled metal (100.4% compared to 2022), of which, according to the UAVtormet Expert Scientific Council, about 2.99 million tons were exported, or 55. 6%.
In 2022, the share of exports amounted to 81.7% (4.37 million tons with a total production of rolled metal of 5.35 million tons). The share of semi-finished products in export supplies last year was 40.30%, which is noticeably lower than the figure for the same period in 2022 (43.45%). The share of flat products in export supplies for 2023 is also noticeably higher than the figure a year earlier (40.41% and 36.34%, respectively). At the same time, the share of long products is comparable to the figure for the previous similar reporting period (19.53% in 2023 versus 20.21% in 2022).
In 2023, the capacity of the domestic market amounted to 3505.6 thousand tons of rolled metal, of which 1118.6 thousand tons or 31.91% were imported. In 2022, the capacity of the domestic market was 1598.6 thousand tons, of which 621.6 thousand tons or 38.88% were imported. Thus, in 2023 there is an increase in the capacity of the domestic market compared to 2022 by 119.29%, with a simultaneous reduction in the share of the import component by 6.98%.
The structure of imports last year was still characterized by a significant dominance of flat products over long products (76.08% and 23.87%, respectively); in 2022, the dominance of flat products over long products was also significant (68.69% and 30.41%, respectively). The main export markets for Ukrainian metal products in 2023, according to UAVtormet, were EU countries (82%) and other European countries (7.5%). Among metallurgical importers for 2023, the first place is occupied by other European countries (42.4%), the second place is occupied by the EU-27 (37.3%), and the third place is occupied by Asian countries (18.2%).
